This is our last PENN movie for Room 11 2019. I really enjoyed dressing up and putting on a play. I liked learning about how to keep ourselves safe in and around water at Glen Innes Aquatics. Making Fruit kababs was awesome. Playing Chubby Bunny for our writing experience. Our treasure box has been full of fun and treats and slime. Reading about pizza and then we made pizza. We went to the beach to explore the rock pools, that was lot of fun. We have had so much fun learning together in Room 11.

Tataiako 2019
This afternoon a group of teachers and administration staff presented the Tataiako Curriculum as part of our Monday staff meeting. Each team was given a Whakatauki to represent in any way they thought best and there was a prize for the best team. Each team shared their Whakatauki and a member of the Tataiako team shared with their own in depth representation on each of the Tataiako curriculum areas. Our Kids are so blessed to have an amazing group of teachers and staff. Huge thanks to the admin staff Leigh Flavelle, Donna Mcmillan, Charlotte Sorenson and Ross Takerei and Francis Cassidy.

Team 4 Room 11.
It's been a very busy term, the students have settled well into the day to day routines and my expectations, we are working towards a cohesive learning environment and so far things going really well. I'm very happy and the students are too.
We got straight into testing, the students didn't like to write but I needed a sample for report writing. I have to say after 8 weeks in Room 11 the students have written some really good narratives. They really enjoy writing now. My professional inquiry is in Writing and I look forward to working with Pacifica boys in Room 11. I have some very good readers with excellent decoding and next term we will work on comprehension. Parent-teacher conference went well I got 50% attendance from parents. I have an excellent team and look forward to working with them.

How to make a Pulley
Found this video from 2018, Miss Moran and I, had so much fun making this short film. Miss Moran (camerawoman), Ms Tumahai giving instructions for
Year 2 students to follow. Students got to make their own pulleys. Wish I couldn't find some footage of the kids, I'll keep looking.

DMic Lesson
We have been measuring and decision making, questioning, and experimenting. We have measuring the length of the pools at the Glen Innes Aquatics Centre, how many metres we can swim, the longest a student kick the ball and the shortest distance. We measured the distance between Ms Tumahai's and the socket to find out how long the charger cord has to be. We had so much fun making and measuring our team stack of sandwiches and then adding up all the stacks to find out long it was.
Unfortunately we all ate our sandwiches before we got to measure the whole class.
But lucky for us we recorded our groups stacks then added them all to get the total. Watch our video clip to see how much our classroom stack measured.

The New Room 11
When I move into a new classroom I'm very particular. Things have to be in the right place. Every corner, cupboard, table and chair has to scrubbed and cleaned. My family think I'm a little over the top. This email is to thank my whanau for giving up their Saturday to help me get Room 11 ready for Monday, Also Mr Jacobsen and Mr Shaw for the things that I have asked for. The lovely tech girls, Shaniah and Tia, thank you for saying "YES" and making it possible to have the computers exactly where I want them and all the things you do with computers. Thanks to all the students who helped me move to the girls who moved furniture, thank you, because of you all Room 11 looks amazing.

E noho ra Team 2
An opportunity to teach higher up in the school has been offered. I have wanted to move into the world of chrome books for a little while now but did not expect it would happen so soon into a new year. So I say E noho ra to Team 2 and join Team 4. I will miss the children but if they follow my directions to my new class then they will find me.
Not Good Bye just see you all later.

I Like Your Latitude
Team 2 will focus on Directions. Students will try to create maps showing the different places. Give instructions that show precise step by step directions. Get creative in clubs, making mazes and understanding directions up, down, left, right, half turn, quarter turn, over under.
This movie was made at the end of term 1. The teachers thought it would be a good idea to have an Easter Egg Hunt and explain to the students that to find Easter Eggs they would need to look up, down, left, right, half turn, quarter turn, over and under.

End of Term
I have had a successful 1st Term in Room 25 Team 2, the students have settled very quickly into the class routines and expectations within the class and Team 2. My inquiry into writing for Pacifica and Maori boys has been successful in my opinion. The boys want to write, my focus groups can confidently, with the picture cards where the boys need to make their own sentences and then copy them neatly into their writing books and then read them to a friend or the teacher has been so encouraging. These boys and girls like writing time.
Our Team collaborative reading program has been really good. In regards to working with other students from other spaces in the team, this has been a great opportunity to get to know other students in the team.
DMic continues to be a bit of a struggle at the beginning of a term as the students settle back into school routines. I have a few gifted and very intelligent students who think and discussed DMic questions and came up with ways, solution, ideas and thoughts of how to solve DMic questions.

Our school-wide focus has had an impact on the way we treat each other. In Room 25 I have emphasised the importance of sharing your feelings and thinking about the feelings of others. How important it is to have empathy and what it means to be better together 'Kia pai te kotahi. It has been a busy term.

Inquiry
I thought I would share the progress of one student in Room 25 who is really enjoying writing and continues to impress me. He listens to instructions and tries hard to sound out letters to words he needs for writing. This student started the year using the picture cards making up to 3 sentences and copying these into his writing book.
This student no longer needs the picture cards for writing and is now what I call in the independent writing group. This student is writing about all of the experiences we have had this term. The 1st and 2nd images are writing with the support of picture cards. The 3rd is an independent piece of writing without support. The forth imaging is a blog post and the last image is the writing sample about making fruit kebabs.

PENN
This is our first PENN short film for 2019. We have been learning about how to keep our teeth strong and healthy. We have created our own pictures in an EE. We even brush our teeth at school.

Inquiry
For our writing experience I let the student make fruit kebabs. I cut and chopped, sliced and peeled the fruit and placed it all into a bowl. The students took turns to make their own combination of fruit for their skewers. We had marshmallows and chocolate sauce. We all ate our fruit kebabs outside.
After some discussion, thinking, and brainstorming the students began writing their recount about making fruit kebabs. I was pleasantly surprised how enthusiastic they were to begin writing.

Writing
I'm really excited about the writing in Room 25. This week I have 3 experiences for writing. The first one is about Rippa Rugby and the next is about a student who had a birthday last week and the whole of team 2 got an ice block each. The last experience for the week was making the tallest marble run in team 2. We have a new genre this week and it's recount writing. We talked a lot about recount writing and what kind of writing this was. I'll share some of the boys writing in my next post.

Writing
After 3 weeks of getting my boys to write using picture cards. We have had some success. The boys enjoy writing. They have become very independent in making their own sentences and were disappointed when we did not have writing. The boys said they liked making their own sentences and then having something to write. What is really inspiring and giving me hope is the boys can read their sentences back to me.
The image above is just a couple of the sentences the boys can make. There were lots of discussions about the "Who" would be in their sentence and "What" that person would be doing and "Where" they would be doing this. I have a set of cards between 2 students. I hear the students sharing and having conversations about going to the super market with own family and these conversation are important. I have already taken the full stops out of each packet of cards and next week I'll take out all the WHO cards to see what the boys will write.

Inquiry 2019
This year I will be working with boys in particular. There are a group of boys who I have identified as needing support with writing. I'll give them experiences and real life situations to write about because sometimes boys don't always remember what happened in the weekend and some students don't have anything to write about. So together we can have some experiences for the students to write about.
